Electrical equipment requires protection against many unprecedented factors that can lead to their damage or worse, complete failure. This is why there are many cable accessories in use that secures the electrical equipment from acting out and maintains smooth flow of current.
One of the accessories that is not often discussed is a Surge Arrester. This device plays a vital role in safeguarding critical electrical apparatus that helps in running uninterrupted grid systems. At this year’s largest energy event of the Middle East - MEE 2024, this device will be featured as a prominent name, Chardon Group will display its product T-Body Surge Arrester. To get a first-hand experience of this product, you have to make your way to Dutco Tennant’s showcase at MEE 2024 in Hall 5, Booth D10 of Dubai World Trade Centre from 16-18 April. But before you visit them and learn in-depth about their product, how about you brush up on the basics of this device. Read on to know all things essential about surge arresters. Surge Arrester - What Is It Exactly? Surge arresters are devices that manage high-voltage currents and ensure that the device remains safe from it. Typically, a surge arrester comprises metal oxide varistors (MOVs) or gas discharge tubes (GDTs) joined between the power lines and ground. The cause behind energy surges happen due to different factors which include lightning strikes, electrical faults or power grid switching. Surge arresters operate by effectively deflecting excessive voltage away from reaching sensitive equipment. As a result, it prevents their damage and enables the electrical system’s protection. Different Surge Arrester Types Essentially, there are three different kinds of surge arresters. These are: Type 1 Surge Arrester: They are also known by the name of primary surge arresters. They are specifically designed to control the high-energy surges which can be caused due to lightning strikes. For their best use, they are meant to be installed at the main electrical panel. Type 2 Surge Arrester: These types of surge arresters are installed at the point switch that includes places such as individual outlets or the electronic device itself. They are capable of handling small surges that occur more frequently essentially due to power grid fluctuations or other internal factors. Type 3 Surge Arrester: These are often combined in the electronic device itself and are designed to protect against low-energy surges. Perks of Utilising Surge Arresters Aside from protecting electrical equipment, they also provide a few other benefits. They are -
